Memory Foam Mattress Facts, Tempurpedic Mattress Reviews and Other Mattresses
If you’re considering the purchase of a memory foam mattress, Tempurpedic mattress reviews can be a helpful way to compare them with other mattresses.
I’ve written countless articles that have been distributed all over the internet about what to look for when you buy a memory foam mattress so you don’t get scammed by anyone.
I’ve also written a memory foam mattress buyers guide in the form of a book that’s sold on Amazon for $19.95. You can buy that book at Amazon or you can download it from my website for free.
In order to judge a memory foam mattress there are 5 main things you should know before you buy.
Not checking out any one of these 5 things can mean you’ll end up with a memory foam mattress that’s probably not going to make you comfortable and may be a very poor investment in your sleep and your overall health.
A good memory foam mattress will have all 5 of these characteristics and you will have a very good chance of loving it right from the start.
Memory Foam Mattress Tip #1
Make sure the foam in your memory foam mattress is poured in America.
This is the most important of the 5 tips because manufacturers in America are working under some strict regulations regarding the chemicals they are allowed to use in their products.
Memory foam mattresses that are poured in other countries can contain all kinds of harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, CFC’s, PBDE’s and a multitude of others.
Most foreign manufacturers will use anything in their foam that lessens the cost of producing it regardless of what it might do to your health.
I’ve always maintained that sleeping on a memory foam mattress that’s made using foreign poured foam can be like sleeping on a toxic waste dump.
These chemicals are what have gotten memory foam a reputation for stinking, sleeping hot and being way too firm for a comfortable night’s sleep.
CAUTION: Be aware also that many retailers will use the term “Made in America” when they are actually using foreign foam and then making some part of the mattress in America. Ask specifically if their memory foam mattress is made using foam that is poured in America.
Memory Foam Mattress Tip #2
Check for the density of the foam.
5 lb density foam is considered to be the ideal density for the support of the human body and don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise.
Using less dense foam in a memory foam mattress will end up giving you less support for your body and will wear out much sooner than the 5 lb density memory foam.
CAUTION: Foreign foam manufacturers use clay additives to give their foam a false density rating so you can’t even count on the density rating on foreign poured foams.
The clay additives will make a memory foam mattress very hard and you won’t like sleeping on them.
Memory Foam Mattress Tip #3
You want to make sure the memory foam mattress you are considering is temperature sensitive.
The very definition of memory foam is that it’s a temperature sensitive material. If it’s not temperature sensitive, it’s not memory foam.
This temperature sensitivity is what makes a memory foam mattress so comfortable. It allows the mattress to soften under areas where your body is lying to deliver contoured support and pressure relief.
Memory Foam Mattress Tip #4
It’s the actual memory foam layer that’s important, not the overall thickness of the mattress.
Memory foam mattresses are made up of layers of foam. The top layer or top few layers are made up of memory foam and the rest of the mattress is made of base foam.
That’s why you never flip a memory foam mattress…you’d be sleeping on the base foam.
Many times you see memory foam mattresses that are 14″ – 16″ thick but there is only 2″ of memory foam on top.
That mattress is less likely to be comfortable than an 8″ mattress with 3″, 4″ or 5″ of memory foam on top.
Remember, it’s the memory foam that makes the mattress comfortable so check on the actual layer of memory foam and insist that it be at least 3″ thick or you won’t be happy with your memory foam mattress.
Memory Foam Mattress Tip #5
Make sure the company you buy from offers some kind of low risk sleep test.
You can’t tell how your body will react to any mattress by lying on it for 15 minutes in a mattress store.
You need time to sleep on it for at least 30 days before you decide if it’s for you or not.
Insist that the company you are considering dealing with has a low risk sleep test period of at least 30 days.
Read the terms carefully to see exactly what’s involved in returning the memory foam mattress if you find it’s not going to work for you.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that if you follow these instructions that you’ll end up with a great mattress but you’ll have a much better chance of it than just going into it blind, so to speak.
I have manufactured my mattresses with these 5 things in mind and, then, I’ve added some improvements like my improved air flow feature.
Instead of using a cheap egg crate foam, I’ve used solid sheets of foam that are open celled to allow every memory foam mattress I make to breathe throughout so you have the best chance possible of sleeping cooler than you would on other memory foam mattresses.
If you’re considering buying a Tempurpedic mattress you should read a few Tempurpedic mattress reviews as well before you buy a memory foam mattress from them to make sure you have the best information on their products.
